Prison Industries

Overview

As part of prisoners' rehabilitation program in Botswana, prisoners are taught skills in various trades, they also manufacture various items according to customers' specifications at prison workshops and perform repair work.

Who is eligible?

All members of the public

How do I get this service?
  1. Customers can contact any Prison which have the industries workshop services they require. They will then receive information on whom to contact on the service they require.
  2. Customers receive an estimate of the total cost, including both materials and labour, prepared by the officer in charge of the workshop. Customers pay a deposit of:
  • 50% of the estimated cost for manufactured items.
  • 75% of the estimated cost for items to be repaired.
  1. Upon completion of the work, customers are informed by telephone and in writing that the work is available for collection.
  2. Customers then pay the balance of the costs and collect the item at the prison workshop. Customers are advised to collect their items within three (3) months. Failure to do so may result in the item(s) being sold at public auction to pay expenses.
What supporting documents are required?

In order to obtain the service customers will need to present:

      Valid copies of:

  • National Identity card (Omang) for citizens.
  • Passport for non-citizens.
How long will this service take?

The length of time required to complete the work depends on the nature of each individual order. On average, completion of the work takes three (3) weeks.

How much does it cost?

The cost of this service varies with the material and labour required to complete it. Both material and labour costs are included in the estimated price.
