President Duma Boko
Jul 01, 2026

President Duma Boko has urged Batswana to embrace and live by the values and principles championed by Botswana's founding President, Sir Seretse Khama, saying they remain relevant to the country's future.

Speaking during Sir Seretse Khama Day commemorations at the Parliament grounds on Wednesday, where leaders laid wreaths at Sir Seretse's Statue, President Boko said the founding President believed strongly in self-reliance (Ipelegeng).

"The person whose legacy we are celebrating today was heavily invested in the concept of self-reliance (Ipelegeng). Batswana were encouraged to do more for themselves rather than depend on government handouts. Many heeded the call, took the initiative and worked hard to improve their lives," he said.

President Boko said Sir Seretse's vision laid the foundation for Botswana's development and urged citizens to emulate his values.

"We are proud to have had a leader of Sir Seretse Khama's stature. His vision laid the foundation upon which the next generation of leaders continued the development trajectory of our country. We encourage Batswana to take a leaf from the values he espoused and take Botswana forward," he said.

He described Sir Seretse as a true patriot who ensured the country's mineral wealth benefited all citizens rather than only communities where the resources were found.

The firstborn son of Sir Seretse, Former President Seretse Khama Ian Khama said his father united Botswana's diverse tribes under one national identity.

"Seretse brought together diverse tribes and communities under one identity—Batswana. He promoted unity, peace and mutual respect," he said.

Khama IV, Bangwato Kgosi added that the founding President strengthened democratic governance by building strong institutions instead of concentrating power.

"He upheld the importance of Bogosi while strengthening democratic governance. He did not centralize power. Instead, he built enduring institutions—Parliament, the civil service and the judiciary—that have guided our nation," he said.

He further said Sir Seretse ensured Botswana's diamond wealth was invested wisely in education, healthcare, infrastructure and the country's future, always placing national interest above self-interest.
