Jul 29, 2026

The Ministry of Higher Education and MMG Khoemacau signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 24th July 2026, marking a major milestone in strengthening collaboration between Government and industry to develop a highly skilled workforce for Botswana's mining sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister of Higher Education, Hon Prince Maele described the partnership as a landmark initiative that advances Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and prepares Batswana for careers in the modern mining industry.  A key outcome of the partnership will be the establishment of a Mining Centre of Excellence at Maun Technical College where industry-led training will equip students with practical skills for underground and mechanised mining.

The acting President - Africa Operations and Director- Finance, Mr Wei Gao reaffirmed MMG Khoemacau's commitment to investing in people and skills development. As part of the partnership, the company donated an underground mining vehicle for practical training, a photocopying machine valued at P145,000 and pledged ongoing technical support to maintain training equipment.
The collaboration will also create opportunities for graduate employment, industrial attachments, internships and hands-on learning to ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and experience required by the evolving mining industry. It will also reflect a shared vision in empowering young people, strengthening TVET, and building a future-ready workforce.
