Jun 17, 2026

The Ministerial Session of the inaugural Botswana–Lesotho Bi-National Commission (BNC) convened today at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC), marking a historic milestone in the deepening of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The session was co-chaired by Minister of International Relations, Dr Phenyo Butale, and his Lesotho counterpart, the Honourable Limpho Tau.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Butale called on both nations to anchor the Commission upon a firm foundation that is robust enough to withstand global uncertainties. He underscored its strategic importance as a mechanism to advance economic resilience, youth empowerment, and regional integration for the collective benefit of Batswana and Basotho.

The session covered a wide-ranging agenda spanning critical areas of mutual interest, including the Lesotho–Botswana Water Transfer Project, trade and agricultural co-operation, education and skills development, and security.

Ministers acknowledged the growing commercial ties between the two countries and reaffirmed their commitment to translating dialogue into concrete outcomes. Particular emphasis was placed on expanding opportunities for young people through digital innovation, entrepreneurship, vocational training, and technology-driven enterprise. The potential of tourism as a catalyst for economic stimulation was also recognised as a key avenue for collaboration.

In his closing remarks, Lesotho's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Tau, extended gratitude to Botswana for its warm hospitality and commended the spirit of unity and shared vision that defined the session, noting the enduring bond between the two countries.

Both ministers expressed confidence that this inaugural session has laid the essential groundwork for a sustained, results-driven partnership that is poised to unlock the full potential of both Botswana and Lesotho for generations to come.
