The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, today paid a courtesy call on the Assistant Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Maipelo Mophuting-Dikoloti, as part of his official visit to Botswana.
The meeting reiterated the AU-Botswana partnership, focusing on conflict prevention, peace-building, mediation, and strengthening regional security against emerging threats.
Ambassador Adeoye underscored that peace and security are fundamental pillars for Africa's socio-economic development, noting that stable and secure nations are better positioned to attract investment, create employment opportunities and improve the wellbeing of their citizens. He highlighted the importance of proactive conflict prevention, dialogue and inclusive governance in ensuring lasting peace across the continent.
The pair exchanged lessons from Botswana’s model of stability, rule of law, and peaceful transitions. Botswana continues to be recognised as a model of political stability, adherence to the rule of law and peaceful transitions of power, reinforcing its reputation as a beacon of democracy on the continent. These values closely align with the AU’s Agenda 2063 aspirations for "The Africa We Want."
Mophuting-Dikoloti said Botswana will continue to work closely with the AU and regional partners to promote collective security, strengthen institutions and address both traditional and emerging security threats. She noted that cooperation, knowledge sharing and mutual learning among African nations remain essential in building resilient societies capable of preventing conflict and fostering sustainable peace.
Both parties expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation and supporting initiatives that promote peace, security, stability and prosperity for Botswana, the Southern African region and the entire African continent.
