Overview

A person may be registered as a citizen of Botswana by settlement, if they have been legally residing in Botswana for a continuous period of 20 years and has no right to any citizenship, thus may be classified as 'stateless'.  

 

 

Who is eligible?

A person who is not a citizen of any country, or has no right to any citizenship and has legally lived as member of a particular community in Botswana for a continuous period of 20 years.

How do I get this service?

 

  • Completed Form A 
  • Completed Form 4
  • After processing, the applicant will be notified of the outcome
  • If successfully, the applicant will be issued with Certificate of Citizenship by Settlement

     

What supporting documents are required?
  • Completed Form A
  • Completed Form 4
  •  Two coloured passport sized photos
  •  Certified copy of valid birth certificate or completed Declaration of Birth Form in lieu of birth certificate
  •  Certified copy of previous and valid residence permits
  •  Letter from tribal authority where the applicant settled
  • Affidavits from witnesses(minimum of three) with close knowledge of the applicant and family background, each accompanied by certified copy of identity document

Approximately three months
