Issuance of Import Permit of Live Animal(s), Animal Product(s) and Animal Feed(s)

Overview

This service allows clients to import animals, animal products, animal feeds, Animal/feeds Samples for research purposes etc into the country in order to achieve country wide traceability of the commodities. Animal movement can be for the following purposes; for slaughter, for rearing and translocation.  For all permits the client must return the previous permit before renewal or issuance of subsequent permits and the product or animal clear details must be provided as well as the quantity.

Origin country should not have major Notifiable diseases for such livestock e.g. foot and mouth for cattle, Avian Influenza or Newcastle for chicken and African swine fever for pigs.

 

Who is eligible?
  • Registered Livestock Keeper (citizens and non-citizens legally resident in Botswana)
  • Unregistered keeper (Diplomats, Tourists, researchers)
How do I get this service?
  • Visit the nearest District Veterinary Office with relevant document and complete an application form.
  • Email DVSpermits [at] gov.bw (DVSpermits[at]gov[dot]bw) or Call 002673689510/9513 to get help.
What supporting documents are required?

Livestock (Animals)

  • Veterinary-health certificate from country of original,
  • Relevant test results as per Import permit requirements
  • transit permit in case  animals passes through other countries
  • CITES permit in case of game animals

           

Livestock products

  • Veterinary-health certificate of country of original
  • Relevant test results where needed as per import permit requirements
  • CITES permit in case of game products

Livestock Feeds

  • Veterinary-health certificate of           original country           
  • Veterinary Import permit
  • transit permit in case feeds goes through other countries       
  • Properly labelled containers/bags in accordance         with labelling standards covered by the country regulations and CODEX Standards on Labelling
  • NB: Botswana does not allow use of animal protein, antibiotics, anabolic hormones and thyrostatic substances in feeds and it’s a requirement that Exporting country should attest to their absence in the feed Imported into Botswana.

 

Dogs and Cats

  • Valid rabies immunisation record (For dogs and cats)
  • Kittens and puppies under 3 months old (Proof that  the mother (dam) was vaccinated against at least one month but not more than 12 months prior to giving birth
  • Proof that there are no movement restrictions for rabies control in your origin area.
  • Submit the pets to the office for inspection before issuance of Export  permit

 

Movement of dogs and cats within SADC region

  • Veterinary Movement           permit (from exporting country)                    
  • Veterinary Health certificate or Health card,           
  • Rabies Certificate
  • Document must be in English or Setswana

Issuance of Transit Permit for livestock and livestock products

Overview

This service allows farmers to move animals across the country to their Destination Country. Origin should NOT have major Notifiable diseases for such livestock e.g. foot and mouth for cattle, Newcastle for chicken and African swine fever for pigs.

Registration of Physical Planners

Overview

The Town and Country Planning Act of 2013,under past II 4(2) stipulates the function of Director of Town and Country Planning as to keep a register of persons registered to practice as physical planners in Botswana.

Who is eligible?

All individuals who have successfully attained a qualification within the discipline of planning.

How do I get this service?
  • Complete, and submit the application form to register as a physical planner
  • Pay the registration fee 
  • The Planner’s registration will process the application and register the planner based on whether the application fully satisfies all requirements requested
What supporting documents are required?
  • Certified copy of identity document or passport
  • Certified copy ( ies) of relevant academic certificate (s) from recognized academic planning institution (s)
  • Curriculum Vitae (cv)
  • Affiliation with a local planning institute

User Application for Botswana Animal Identification and Traceability System (BAITS)

Overview
  • The BAITS system provides a platform for farmers to provide information on their livestock.
  • This platform is offered online (via internet access). BAITS is used for animal registration, transfer of ownership, arrival of livestock, veterinary drug treatments and removal of dead/fallen stock.
  • This also allows the farmer to report in the system animals they have lost. Animals mabe lost due to natural causes or slaughter.
Who is eligible?

Citizens and non-citizens.

How do I get this service?
  • Fill and Submit user access application form at any local Department of Veterinary Services office.
  • A username and password specific for the individual will be issued at time of application.
What supporting documents are required?
  • Valid ID card.
  • An affidavit (if custodian).
How long will this service take?

Thirty (30) minutes.

Artificial Insemination (AI), on-farm AI programme

Overview

This service allows dairy farmers who are starting or currently involved in dairy production to register for specialized training. 

Who is eligible?

Citizen and Non-citizen dairy farmers.

How do I get this service?

Visit the closest District Animal Production Office and register for the AI training with supporting documents.

The Animal Production Officer will inform the applicant about the start of training and other details.

What supporting documents are required?
  • Certified copy of valid National Identity Card (Omang).
  • Certified copy of Passport (for a foreign worker).
How long will this service take?

Livestock Keeper Registration

Overview

This service allows Livestock Keepers to be registered and allocated a Livestock Keeper ID in BAITS, this is linked with the electronically Identified Cattle, Brands Registration and location. The service involves, new registration, Renewal and /or issuance of a Keeper Card. Livestock keepers are valid for 2 years.

Who is eligible?
  • Valid National Identity Card (Omang) and children under 16 years a Birth Certificate
  • Non-citizens need to have a valid Resident Permit.
  • Companies need to be in possession of a valid Company's Registration Certificate.
How do I get this service?

Visit the nearest Veterinary District Office for registration

What supporting documents are required?
  • A valid National Identity Card (Omang) or a Birth Certificate for citizens (Original or certified).
  • A valid Resident Permit and valid Passport for non-citizens (Original or certified).
  • A valid Company’s Registration Certificate for companies.​
How long will this service take?

Five (5) working days.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost, it is just registration of a Livestock Keeper at BWP10.00.
